Method
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Give it a good mix. These dry ingredients are the base of your donuts. Next, pour in the buttermilk and melted butter. Stir gently until all ingredients are well combined but do not overmix. Overmixing can lead to tough donuts rather than fluffy ones.
Step 2: Heat the Oil
- In a deep pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. You’ll want enough oil to submerge the donuts fully. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop in a small amount of batter. If it sizzles and rises quickly, your oil is ready.
Step 3: Shape the Donuts
- Scoop the batter using a tablespoon or a small cookie scoop. Carefully drop them into the hot oil. You can make them round or even try a traditional donut shape using your fingers if you’re feeling adventurous.
Step 4: Fry Until Golden
- Fry the donuts for around 1-2 minutes on each side. Keep an eye on the color. You want them golden brown, not too dark. Once they are cooked, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb the excess oil.
Step 5: Coat the Donuts
- Immediately after removing the donuts from the oil, roll them in granulated sugar. The heat from the donuts helps the sugar stick. If you want to do a chocolate glaze instead, feel free to dip the cooled donuts in melted chocolate and sprinkle with nuts!
Notes
- Maintain Oil Temperature: Too low, and the donuts absorb too much oil. Too high, and they burn. A thermometer is a great tool here.
- Don't Overcrowd the Pan: Frying too many donuts at once will drastically lower the oil temperature. Fry in batches for best results.
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Old baking powder or flour can affect the rise and fluffiness of the donuts.
- Experiment with Flavors: Consider adding vanilla extract or cinnamon to the batter for an enticing flavor twist.
- Make Ahead: You can prepare the dough in advance, chill it, and then fry as needed for warm donuts throughout the day.
