Ingredients

  • Here’s what you’ll need for a delightful batch of homemade applesauce:
  • 4 - medium apples - peeled, cored, and chopped I recommend a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for a lovely balance of tart and sweet
  • - ¾ cup water
  • - ¼ cup white sugar or adjust to taste; you can always start with less
  • - ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon essential for that warm, comforting flavor
  • 1 - tablespoon lemon juice adds a nice zing and helps to balance the sweetness
  • - Pinch of nutmeg a little hint of nutmeg goes a long way in elevating the flavor

Method

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
  1. Before diving into the cooking process, it’s key to gather all your ingredients. This ensures a smooth workflow. You’ll need your apples, water, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg at the ready.
Step 2: Combine the Ingredients
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples with the ¾ cup of water, ¼ cup sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir everything together until the apples are well coated with the sugar and spices. This mixture is going to transform into something special!
Step 3: Cook the Mixture
  1. Cover your saucepan and place it over medium heat. You’ll want to let the apples cook for about 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. You’ll know it’s ready when the apples are soft and mushy.
Step 4: Mash and Adjust
  1. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the apple mixture cool for a few minutes. Then, using a fork or a potato masher, mash the apples to your desired consistency. You can make it creamy or leave it a bit chunky—totally your call! If you feel adventurous, taste it along the way and adjust the sweetness or spice levels as needed.

Notes

- Choose apples wisely: Different varieties yield different flavor profiles. Experiment with what you like best!
- Sweetness adjustment: You can always add more sugar, but remember to taste as you go. You can reduce sugar without sacrificing flavor.
- Store leftovers: If you have leftovers, they can easily be stored in the fridge for about a week.
- Freeze for later: Applesauce can be frozen in an airtight container for up to six months.
- Use as a sugar substitute: Homemade applesauce can replace oil or sugar in many baking recipes.
